BACKGROUND HISTORY

For over  16 years the WALX Team has pioneered the concept of pole walking for Rehab & Stability. Over that time, we have strived to assist people with many medical conditions, such as Rehabilitation to Parkinson’s and as such, worked with many pole manufacturers from around the World. In addition to the 4000 Pole walking instructors, we have trained over 2000 Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in the UK and many countries around the World.

Our vision has always been to provide more than just Stability aid and being able to not only find the best poles but MORE IMPORTANTLY, develop how they are used, specific to each condition; whether that be Rehabilitation from an operation or injury, through to the Stability issues faced with living with the likes of Parkinson’s.

Like everything in life, design and innovation moves forward. We originally found and brought to the UK, the Exerstrider Poles developed in the USA by a guy called Tom Rutlin. Subsequently, one of Tom’s distributors in Canada, further developed the Exerstrider handle design to what became the Activator.

At that time, they served us well but the more users we had, the more we recognised there were issues, especially where poles are used for Stability. Having so much pressure being placed on the Ulnar area of the hand from the core ledge, caused much discomfort for many people. More importantly, it is widely known in the World of engineering that there are  fundamental flaws with push button adjustment in any weight bearing product. Expert Engineering reports identified that drilling 16 holes in an alloy tube will weaken it’s strength by up to 60% and; having two metals of a button and the hole in an alloy tube will cause the anti-corrosive protective coating to be compromised, enlarge the hole and potentially cause catastrophic failure. This flaw has been known in the NHS for decades but; it is cheap to manufacture and saves costs; hence why the NHS typically will not re-use crutches returned to them.

In every walk of life, from using a Mouse on a computer to Hand tool, design engineers had looked the ergonomics to reduce wrist and hand fatigue or accommodated those with conditions such arthritis, yet NO-ONE had considered that knowledge in the design of Handles for walking poles.  We made the decision to take a look at the whole ergonomic design of pole handles, rather than continually having to adapt our teaching methods around third-party pole designs, that were not fit for purpose.

Working in partnership with Fizan poles of Italy, who have been manufacturing poles for 80 years, this led to the development of the NEW WALX Ergo Grip™ handle and two models of poles. The WALX Xcelerator™ and a cuffed handle for the WALX Ability pole range.

Designed by  the WALX Team, who include experts in anatomy & physiology, Doctors, Surgeons and Physiotherapists, we have developed a totally unique Ergo Grip™ handle is positioned at 15° vertically and offset by 12° to better mirror the natural position of the hand and wrist whilst walking. The result is greater comfort, improved support, more natural movement, and reduced wrist strain for not only rehabilitation, stability, and wellbeing walking but fitness training.

In addition to the Poles, the Team has also developed a totally unique “Three phased Punch Technique™” method of using the WALX  Xcelerator and WALX Ability Poles.the

However, we appreciate that some individuals may still be specifically recommended Activator poles by a therapist, healthcare professional, or existing walking group. If this is the case, please contact us and we will happily discuss your needs directly with you or your therapist to ensure you obtain the most appropriate poles for your situation..
