Best walking poles for challenge events

Taking part in a long distance hiking challenge is a rewarding experience but it is important to have the right kit and that includes walking poles.

Our experts will help you to get the right poles for your hike.

Tip 1 – OPT FOR A PAIR OF POLES

Using just one pole is not advisable if you are walking any distance, whilst a single can provide stability on tricky terrain, using only one side of the body for a long period of time is not a good idea. The repetitive action of the many steps you are going to take will take enough toll on your body without creating an imbalance by using one arm more than the other. This action can cause the spine to twist, put too much pressure on the shoulder being used and affect your gait too.

Tip 2-  DON’T STRESS ABOUT POLE WEIGHT

Most poles are pretty lightweight but people do seem to get hung up on having super light poles for long distances. Our experts all agree that weight should only be a major factor if you are travelling by air or public transport or doing an event where poles are only used in certain sections. Otherwise, you should be using them to save your legs, balance your gait and gain some forward propulsion to help performance! In that instance robustness is more important than a few extra kilograms.

Tip 3- AVOID BLISTERS

Always opt for ergonomic handles that are comfy in your hands and made of quality materials designed to be non slip. The key cause of blisters is friction and moisture so look for the latest cork composites which provide a soft feel which is non slip.

Tip 4 – PROTECT YOUR WRISTS & THUMBS

Some of the most common injuries gained on long hikes are not in the knees or feet but due to poor use of poles. Flicking the pole forward before stepping through is a no no. It does not provide propulsion, weight bearing or improved gait. It can however, cause a repetitive strain on the wrist. Similarly, using walking poles in a short action with bent arms will only take some weight off your lower body not provide any performance benefits.  This action is also likely to put pressure on your wrists and shorten your stride too( see our technique tips or POWER OF POLES INTRO COURSE  to help with this) Using your poles at a slant behind you and checking that your wrist is in a neutral position will help you to gain forward propulsion and a good stride – but check you have the correct ergonomic handles or nordic walking straps that facilitate this – see below

ALWAYS choose walking poles which adjust to your height – it will really help your posture, wrist angles and shoulder movement. Poles which are too short will compromise the wrist and cause you to stoop whilst having hem too high will also affect wrist angle and can put pressure through the upper arm and shoulder. There are several ways walking poles adjust with the most typical being a simple twist lock action or a clip lock. If you do want to pop them in your backpack, choose a three part walking pole but otherwise its best to go for two part as this will minimise vibration through the shaft.

Tip 6- GO FOR QUALITY

Walking poles are an extension of your arms, helping you to become a 4 x 4 walker to share the load with the lower body. Choose robust poles that will accompany you on several hikes not cheap tinny alloys that will rattle and can shatter. If they are cheaper than £30 definitely think again or you will be forking out for every hike! No need to opt for non eco friendly carbons though – good aircraft quality alloys are available and these will give you a superb upper body boost with every step you take.
